Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
